Harold Taft, “World’s Greatest Weatherman”

Harold Taft Weather Forecast – copyright(c) 1980 – KXAS Channel 5.North Texas is known for it’s turbulent, ever changing, and often violent weather this time of year, so at this time I would like to dedicate today’s post as a tribute to the late Harold Taft, affectionately known for many years in these parts as “The World’s Greatest Weatherman”, and (IMHO) the best television meteorologist ever to grace our local airwaves.  I grew up with Herold Taft doing the weather on our local NBC affiliate’s (KXAS Channel 5, previously known as WBAP Channel 5 back in the day) news shows.  Viewing this video brought back some fond memories!  The thing that stood out most about Herold’s weather shows was that he could not only explain meteorological terms in easy to understand language, but at the same time he would include more advanced information for those with a better than average understanding of meteorology.  For example he would include standard meteorological symbols such as isobars on his maps and was one of the few who would also present the upper level wind patterns, one of the main keys to understanding and predicting future weather patterns.  He also resisted station management’s later attempts to “dumb down” his presentation and remained informative and appealing to all listeners ranging from children to fellow meteorologists.

Watching this video was also interesting in seeing all the old analog weather instruments and hand-drawn paper weather charts they used to use before everything went double-doppler-dumbed-down-digital!  One interesting thing shown in this video is where Harold holds up two gynormous acorns the size of golf balls.  For those not from around here, those are Burr Oak acorns.  My grandparents had some of those trees, but I’ve never been able to sprout one of those acorns.  Harold always went beyond the current local forecast to describe the weather happening across the country and would often explain in detail the reasons for weather patterns and made weather interesting!  Harold worked for KXAS and WBAP AM/FM for over forty years until shortly before his death in the early nineties due to cancer.  View the full background image copyright(c) Georgetown University – (original website).

In personal news, I got my taxes all done and sent in at the last minute, all twelve pages worth.  Le sigh¡  At least I’m getting a rather large refund this year vs. having had to write a big check last year.  I’m somewhat old-fashioned / paranoid and still do mine on the paper forms, even though I use the free on-line service “TaxACT” to do all the math and fill in the boxes.  I also have them send me a paper refund check because (probably silly paranoid reasoning) I prefer not to (directly) give them any easier access to my bank account or make it any easier to analyse my return, and just because of plain old habit I guess.

I also had my routine dental appointment this week, which went real well – No Cavities again this time, so I don’t have to go back again for at least six months, yay!  Afterwards, I met some friends and chillaxed at Jupiter House Coffee!  The weather was perfect for sitting out front sipping lattes, smoking up, catching up and people-watching.

Quote of the Day II:
“Why Austin? Because Texas has its own power grid, unlike the rest of the nation.  Texas can grow its own food.  Texas is the energy capital of the nation and can produce natural gas, diesel, oil and even jet fuel.  Texas has masses of armed patriots who own more guns than they do pairs of shoes, and that makes Texas practically impenetrable to any invading force.” – Mike Adams, the Health Ranger – Editor of NaturalNews, December 14, 2011.

Attack of the Chocolate Bunnies!

I confess that I have a bit of a sweet tooth for cheap chocolate! My wife & I always get each-other Valentines chocolate boxes the day AFTER Valentines for half-price! Of course I have always looked forward to Easter and biting the ears off those chocolate bunnies ever since childhood! These days they sell them with gynormously tall ears too. Anyway, the day after Easter, I went and scored myself this for less than $3! It’s about a foot tall too! You can also see to the right what’s left of the one my wife bought me for Easter (took me a week to eat it though)! For some reason I’ve never been able to bring myself to actually eat the eyes. Nothing wrong with the way they taste, but for some reason it just seems creepy to me to chew up and injest it’s eyeballs, lol!

The stack of stuff has really exploded since my last post with me finding three of these items within a couple of hours of unleashing my last post on the unsuspecting blogosphere! First, there is this, which really torqued me:

LTC North Texas, the Masters, Long-exposure Photography and much more!

Bubba Watson puts on the Green Jacket at 2012 Masters
(c) 2012 The Augusta Chronicle.
<<<  We attended the annual North Texas area LTC (“Leadership Training for Christ”) conference, an annual inter-congregational gathering for Bible-related children and youth competitions and exhibits.  My daughter came up for the weekend and went with us.  She participated every year until she graduated high school.  This year my wife again served as our church’s coordinator for the Bible Bowl competition.  I also did a large portion of the photography for our church.

As usual, I watched a bit of the final round of the Masters Sunday.  Bubba Watson (USA) won the Green Jacket after defeating Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa in two extra sudden-death playoff holes for a final score of 278 (-10).

Not much else happening around here except the spring flowers are in full bloom, so I’ve been enjoying using my 90mm macro lens I got myself last Christmas.  Anyway, here’s this week’s other interesting stuff for you my loyal readers.

Tornadoes Hit Close to Home

The Dallas / Fort Worth area was lashed by nearly a dozen separate tornadoes yesterday.  This hit very close to home for me.  I was anxiously following the weather reports because a storm larger than the ones that produced the tornadoes was coming over us at nearly the same time. Fortunately all we got locally was over a half inch of much needed rain.  I spend most of my lunch break watching this video live on television while waiting to see if a warning would be issued for us.  This is scary! The most morbid thing about it was when it hit a tractor trailer lot and tossed them around over a hundred feet in the air like small cardboard boxes.  I am amazed and prayerfully grateful that absolutely no one was killed in any of these violent storms!  I believe this to be a true miracle!  I don’t really have any other news this week, but hey, that was plenty of news enough for me!

A Walk with my Macro Lens

I take walks out in the “wilderness” near our house and Lake Weatherford nearly every day, and usually bring my camera, but today’s walk proved to be an unusually good day for photography.  I had gone walking after work yesterday, without my camera because it was cloudy, I had not noticed hardy any wildflowers budding out so far yet this year, and I was just lazy.  I stopped and set down briefly for a break and noticed a small insect swooping in and then just hovering over some weeds nearby.  It appeared to me to be a tiny hornet or wasp of some type that I’ve never seen or noticed before.  I then noticed a couple of others nearby and they did not seem to be at all concerned with my presence, so the next day I decided to bring my camera and my fast macro lens and see if I could capture one, seeing that they tended to hover fairly steadily for several seconds, but would still present a good photographic challenge!  I managed to capture a couple, though not hovering and also discovered some Texas Bluebonnets and some other very interesting wildflowers that had bloomed and looked beautiful in the setting sunlight.  For larger images of these and more of my photographs, please visit my Flickr site!
