Texas-sized Dandelions and Other Assorted Photos and Stuff

"Texas Dandelion"

This photo is a result if an idea I had challenged myself with after seeing a similar photo of an ordinary dandelion on facebook.  Every summer these gynormous dandelion-like flowers bloom here in late May and early June growing upwards of 1-3 feet tall and producing seed heads the size of softballs.  We just love to blow them everywhere and watch the giant parachute-like seeds sail away across our pasture.  I never knew what they were until I searched for them the other day and found out that they are actually called “Western Salsify” (Tragopogon dubius) and grow throughout the United States.  We always just call them “Texas Dandelions” since everything here in Texas is bigger!  There apparently is a distinct flower officially called the “Texas Dandelion” (Pyrrhopappus Carolinianus) that grows in the Eastern-half of our state (learn something new every day)!  (We still have the ordinary dandelions bloom here in early spring too, but these just blow so much better! lol).  Anyway, I created this photo strictly “in-camera” by setting a custom white-balance based on “warm fluorescent light” (around 3000 kelvin) and then adjusting toward blue, and upping the contrast a bit.  The photo itself is 1/250″, f10, iso250 at 90mm with the flower in direct midday sun against a dark, shaded background of bushes.  My next goal is to capture one centered in the sun with a hazy orange sunset background.  This will probably have to wait until next year as both the ordinary dandelions and the Salsify have now completed their blooming cycles.

My wife alerted me to this beautiful large butterfly in our back yard the other day.  Other than that, summer’s arrived right on schedule this year, it’s miserable hot, and I’ve got my “ghetto pool” all set up again.  S. is in China for a summer session “studying abroad” taking two Chinese languages classes.

U.S. college students urge divestment from fossil fuels,  by Kevin Begos and Joann Loviglio, (©) The Associated Press, via The Globe and Mail, May 22, 2013.
me:These young skulls full of mush need to do like we did growing up – start questioning all the BS being blown up their tails by “the man”.  Global warming is an Agenda-21 LIE – there’s been no warming in several years.  Oil is what makes the modern world possible.  It beats all the alternatives, except nuclear for electric generation.  Cars made today are over 90% less polluting than 20 years ago (says the EPA).  When something better comes along the market will drive it just like oil replaced coal and animal power in the twentieth century without “college students” demanding dis-investing in buggy-whip makers.  To those who hate fossil fuels, I ask:  what is your alternative that will continue to enable increasing lifespans, improving overall environmental conditions and a thriving middle class without costing more and producing less?  Any takers?
